Native bees do.  These little insects have an important role to play in Australia’s fragile ecosystems.  Many Australian native plants can only be pollinated by native bees.  They are also much more effective at pollinating flowers than honeybees.

In Australia there are over 2,000 different species of native bees with roughly 300 living in the Adelaide Hills and Mount Lofty Ranges ranging from 2mm to 25mm in size.  Our South Australian native bees are solitary meaning they do not live in hives and cannot produce honey.

Here are some examples of our native bees:

The leafcutter bees (megachile) are found all over Australia and are 6 - 15mm in size. They get the name Leafcutter as the female cuts a circle from a leaf to weave tiny cradles for her eggs inside her nest burrows usually borer holes in logs.

The resin bees use resin to close its nest to protect its young

The blue banded bee is bigger than a honey bee, it has a teal blue body with black strips and is a buzz pollinator

The native Australian stingless bees can live in hives from eastern to northern parts of Australia.  You can do your little bit to help our small Aussie citizens out and Australia’s ecosystems by putting a bee hotel in your garden
